“The numbers don’t lie.”

Story Time
That’s the Fact Jack
No matter how much razzle dazzle may come from your company and your team, the financial statement numbers are the source of truth on the health of your business. Here’s a few thoughts to ensure you are receiving “the facts”.
The Right People: Investing in a good, reputable accounting team—both internally and/or externally— pays dividends. Do they ask questions about the business? Do they clearly explain the numbers pointing out both the good and the bad?
Less Is More: You should be able to manage your business from a one-page summary (in 12+ font). Sure, more detail is available, but you only need it as questions arise.
Operational Info: Mix in key operational stats to add context to the financial performance story. Rather than viewing raw financial numbers, create a Per Unit P&L. That way you can compare a 5000 unit store (or periods) to 4000 and 3000 unit stores.
Trust: Share financial results along with key operational KPI (Key Performance Indicators) with the team. By setting clear expectations plus igniting the team’s competitive drive, they can deliver optimal performance to successfully grow the business.
Accountability: Most business leaders and entrepreneurs are NOT numbers people. Still, hold yourself accountable to review your financials with your accounting team to ensure they clearly explain the business health and drivers to grow for your company.
